As children we all have dreams about what we want to become as adults. One of my childhood dreams was to become a doctor. That dream faded because as a child, I got into many accidents and decided I would leave stitching people up for someone else. So I directed my energy towards Education and taught children as young as five years of age to adults as old as fifty-five. The underlying theme in all of my employment opportunities were that I found myself being the teacher or trainer of something. When I worked in the mall, I trained all new employees on beauty and skincare products. At the call centers, I trained adults on policies, procedures, and software applications. I knew I had the aptitude to learn information quickly and teach other individuals by assessing their learning style.

That does this have to do with following a career path? Sometimes our personal decisions effect our professional decisions. I have encountered many of my childhood friends whose career paths did not start until after they had established families. One friend told me that they were thinking about getting their Masters in Social Work, while juggling a career as a social worker at a new job, a husband, and three children. I told her to keep on with her studies if that is what she wanted to achieve.

Some career opportunities will happen earlier or later than we wanted them to happen. A great book to read about achieving your childhood dreams and following a career path is, The Last Lecture by the late Professor Randy Pausch of Carnegie Mellon University. As a child the author had made a list of things he wanted to achieve as an adult.  In an excerpt from his lecture, he goes on to list the things he wanted to do or be as an adult. He also talks about the brick walls that might be in front of us blocking our path and the reason brick walls are there.

What do you do if you don't have a set career path? Write down all the industries that you find interesting and find one common thread amongst them. You can research different opportunities by doing Google searches, searches on a particular industry, or job title. Once you find that common thread research to see if there is such a profession, if not start branding yourself as the only one of your kind. Work with a professional career coach to outline your goals. It is always good to have someone listen to what you want to do. Chances are they have a lead on what you want to do or know the resources that can help you.

How did I become a resume writer? I had someone tell me that I had a hidden talent, I researched this career industry, and found out that I could still educate individuals on a one-to-one basis. As a resume writer, I educate others about interviewing, negotiating, and the do's and don'ts of job searching. I also get to help people move towards their career path by writing an effective resume.
